The Spirit of Hope Award for 2010
Ms. Janice Bridges from White Sands Missile Range was the Army recipient of the 2010 Spirit of Hope award at the Pentagon Nov. 15, 2011.
Despite the tragic loss of her son in Iraq, she has dedicated herself to getting Soldiers adopted to receive care packages, helping raise money for wheel chairs for wounded Soldiers, been instrumental in raising awareness for suicide in the military, working with Gold Star Moms, offering scholarships in the son's name, and works with youth by teaching math and skills to improve ACT/SAT scores. Her story is really amazing and inspiring.
The Spirit of Hope Award is unlike any award the Department of Defense facilitates. Since 2000, the Military Services and the U.S. Coast Guard have each presented the Spirit of Hope Award to an individual or organization that epitomizes selfless service and dedicated commitment to our military. In 2008, the Department combined presentation of these awards into a joint Pentagon ceremony, adding recognition of a nominee from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, which includes the Joint Staff, Defense Agencies, and the DoD Field Activities.
As the name suggests, this award is named after Mr. Bob Hope and characterizes the values he embodied: duty, honor, courage, loyalty, commitment, integrity and selfless dedication. The nomination can contain contributions in conjunction with their position or activities outside their job description. The eligibility is quite different as it is open to Federal career civilians, military members (Active duty, Reserve, Guard, or former military Service member), private citizens, and organizations. Each sponsor forwards one individual whose patriotism and service reflect that of Mr. Hope. Each of the six recipients receives a bas-relief of Mr. Hope that is gifted by The Wiegand Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization. They administer The Spirit of Hope Award program, create the bas-reliefs, oversee the minting of the medals, archive honoree information, and coordinate The Spirit of Hope Award events and activities, along with the Department sponsor (which rotates each year).
