Appendix C: Professional Competencies

  1. Administration and Management
    Knowledge to business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods and coordination of people and resources.
  2. External Awareness
    Identifies and understands economic, political and social trends that affect the organization.
  3. Innovation
    Develops new insights into situations and applies innovative solutions to make organizational improvements. Creates a work environment that encourages creative thinking and innovation. Designs and implements new or cutting-edge programs/processes
  4. Integrity/Honesty
    Contributes to maintain the integrity of the organization; displays high standards of ethical conduct and understands the impact of violating these standards on an organization, self and others; is trustworthy
  5. Oral communication
    Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and the nature of the information. Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  6. Organizational Awareness
    Knows the organization's mission and functions, and how its social, political and technological systems work and operates effectively within them; this includes the programs, policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the organization.
  7. Planning and Evaluating
    Organizes work, sets priorities, determines resource requirements; determines short or long term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization; monitors progress, evaluates outcomes.
  8. Reasoning
    Identifies rules, principles or relationships that explain facts, data or other information; analyzes information and makes correct inferences or draws accurate conclusions.
  9. Teamwork
    Encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust and group identify; fosters commitment and team spirit; works with others to achieve goals.
  10. Vision
    Understands where the organization is headed and how to make a contribution; takes a long-term view and recognizes opportunities to help the organization accomplish its objectives or move toward the vision
  11. Writing
    Recognizes and uses correct English grammar, punctuation and spelling; communications information in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience.
