While the FMLA provides eligible employees a total of 12 administrative workweeks (480 hours) of leave without pay (LWOP) during any 12-month period for a serious health condition of the employee, it may also be used for: (a) birth of a son or daughter and care of the newborn; (b) placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care, and (c) the care of the employee's spouse, son or daughter, or parent with a serious health condition.
